Main Characters of Section 1

Jim Gallien - He is a union electriction that saw Chris hitchhiking and drove him to the Stampede Trail. Gallien saw that he was unprepared and offered him food and gear. Chris rejected these items, but eventually was convinced to accept boots and socks. Jim also noticed that Chris was very determined and excited. Even though he was not prepared properly, Gallien figured that Chris would be fine and leave if he was in trouble.

Wayne Westerberg - He owns a grain elevator in Carthage, South Dakota. When Wayne saw him hitchhiking, he picked him up and Chris stayed with im for three days. McCandless returned a few weeks later, and he was employed by Westerberg. After Wayne ended up in jail for selling "black boxes", Chris left Carthage, but he continued to keep in touch. They shared ideas and literature.

Jan & Bob Burres - They picked up McCandless at Arcata, California. He stayed at their camp for only a week, but he sent them postcards every month or two for two years. After recieving a letter from the Burres, he traveled back to their campsite. He went with them to the Slabs, where a huge flea-market was going on. Chris helped them sell books, especially if they were written by Jack London. Chris often talked about his future odyssey to Alaska. When he left, he was convinced to take helpful items, but he did not bring them with him.

Walt and Billie McCandless - They are Chris's father and mother. He lived with them in Annandale, Virginia. He did not like to give or recieve gifts. Chris often went on trips by himself without telling his parents where he was going. He sent a letter to his parents after his final year of college, and it was the last time they ever heard from him. They went to visit him later, and he had been gone from his home in Atlanta for five weeks. They eventually decieded to hire a detective to find him.
